Staffordshire Bull Terrier Heritage

Working Lines

The foundational strains that shaped the true working-type Staffordshire Bull Terrier.

Dublin Red Line

The Dublin Red line is one of the most historically significant Irish-type Staffordshire Bull Terrier strains. Originating from the dogs of Willie Delaney, the line became known for its unmistakable red coloration, athleticism, and intense working temperament. Dublin Red dogs were bred for functional ability — not show ring exaggeration — and their structure reflects that purpose.

Key dogs in the Dublin Red lineage include Brindle Devil, Battling Duchess, and Red Warrior. These dogs consistently produced offspring with strong rear drive, deep chests, and the classic Irish Stafford outline: moderate height, powerful yet agile, and built for endurance.

Dublin Red dogs are known for their boldness, courage, and willingness to work. Their temperament is confident, stable, and highly responsive. This line heavily influenced many American working strains, including Dry Branch and Intrepid.

Psycho / Northford Line

The Psycho line is one of the most recognizable and influential working Stafford strains. Originating from CH. Psycho, the line was carried forward through dogs like Black Tiger, The Great Geronimo, and Northford Blackie. These dogs were known for their dark brindle or black coats, powerful heads, and intense working drive.

Psycho dogs are compact, muscular, and extremely agile. Their structure is balanced and functional, with strong shoulders, powerful hindquarters, and excellent stamina. They are often described as “all business” — focused, determined, and capable of intense work.

The Psycho line influenced many modern working strains and remains one of the most respected sources of working temperament and structure.

Dry Branch Line

The Dry Branch line originates in South Georgia and is heavily influenced by Irish imports and early American working stock. Nicky Tompkins of Dry Branch Kennels played a major role in preserving this strain, maintaining dogs with strong working temperament and traditional Stafford structure.

Dry Branch dogs are known for their athleticism, moderate size, and stable temperament. They are confident, reliable, and capable under pressure. Their structure reflects the original 1935 standard — moderate, balanced, and built for functional ability.

This line contributed significantly to the development of the Steadfast strain.

Intrepid Line

The Intrepid line, founded by Ken Hodgin, is one of the most respected American working Stafford strains. Intrepid dogs trace back to Irish-type working heritage and were selected for functional structure, drive, and temperament. Hodgin’s breeding program emphasized stability, courage, and athleticism.

Intrepid dogs are typically balanced, moderate, and highly capable. Their temperament is steady, focused, and responsive — ideal for working applications and preservation breeding. Many Intrepid dogs carried Dublin Red and Psycho influence.

Intrepid blood is found in many modern preservation lines, including Steadfast.

Dynamite Line

The Dynamite line originates from Pete Sparks’ famous dog, SBT Rocket, and was later carried forward by Stan Thorn. This strain is known for producing dogs with exceptional drive, strong structure, and unmistakable working temperament.

Dynamite dogs often show powerful rear drive, strong shoulders, and a classic working Stafford outline — moderate, athletic, and capable. Their temperament is bold, confident, and highly responsive.

The Dynamite line is one of the most influential American working strains and remains a cornerstone of preservation breeding.

Steadfast Line

The Steadfast line represents modern preservation breeding, tracing back to Ordays, Sparks, Intrepid, Dry Branch, and Dynamite heritage. Since 1999, Steadfast Staffords has focused on maintaining the true working Staffordshire Bull Terrier — moderate, athletic, stable, and capable.

Steadfast dogs are selected for temperament, structure, and heritage. They embody the original 1935 standard: a dog of courage, reliability, and functional athleticism. The line emphasizes moderate size, strong rear drive, balanced structure, and stable working temperament.

Steadfast Staffords continues to preserve the working heritage of the breed through careful selection, historical research, and dedication to the original purpose of the Staffordshire Bull Terrier.
